Time to celebraaate!
Happy Birthday 6Wunderkinder
Beautiful, simple and innovative products that make peoples’ lives easier. This is what motivates me each day and where the 6Wunderkinder story begins.
From 6 co-founders to 36 Wunderkinder in just two years, it’s been an epic adventure. So many things have happened - we’ve launched two products on 11 platforms, and we’ve seen them become the daily companion of millions of people around the world. We have been so busy, we not only forgot to celebrate some of our milestones, we also missed the opportunity to share some important lessons with you.
So, today I would first like to take this opportunity to invite you to our birthday party. It’s going to be a lot of fun! Second, I would like to share with you two of the most important lessons in my life.
Work to learn, not to earn
I’ve always dreamed of building up an inspiring company, with great products, a great atmosphere and a very personal spirit. I wanted to work with people I really care about, so I invited five of my best friends to start 6Wunderkinder with me. It wasn’t fancy job titles that we all wanted, but the chance to work with total creative freedom and fun. That’s why we started this company and what every single Wunderkind gets the opportunity to experience every day.
It’s always humbling to think about how lucky we have been - I have worked with so many amazing people here that share the same vision, found great advisors and experienced investors who support us to do what we do.
The biggest lesson I learned is work to learn, not to earn. I can remember I read this in a book roughly 10 years ago, but now I really know what it means. It means you don’t work for a specific reason, you work because you love it and you strive for a greater good in the end. Some people say ‘to change the world’, but I like to call it ‘leaving your footprints’ and influence people’s lives in a positive way. No matter, if they are team members, partners or users.
Something that you may not know is that the very first version of Wunderlist was built in only two and a half months. The original concept was to use it as a testing bed - a foundation if you will - for what was to come, but that quickly changed. We watched it grow faster than any other task manager. Knowing that something you built with your hands is helping over 2.5 million people every day from all over the world is just such an indescribable feeling.
Be humble, grateful and proud
The success of Wunderlist has given us so many opportunities. It’s what allowed us to build Wunderkit. The experience so far has been different to Wunderlist, but it is also a very different product. What we have seen so far in the beta is the growing of a community of passionate users that are helping us immensely. As always, through your feedback we are learning so much. So truly, thank you for helping us make it happen.
At the same time, we experienced the fast growth of our company and not just in terms of the number of employees. For the longest time I had been trying to define a company culture, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s impossible to define one, because our company culture is the great people that I work with. It is a living thing. Every person just needs to be given the chance to give their input, express themselves and grow their own potential.
I started 6Wunderkinder two years ago because I wanted to learn how to build up an inspiring working experience, how to create a highly-profitable business and most of all, I wanted to find a great team of people I could start new adventures with. I haven’t done all of that yet, but I have a great team of people that inspire me everyday. The work that I see my team do reminds me that this amazing adventure I’m on is truly worth it.
So what’s coming next? You might wonder what we’re currently working on, let me just say one thing. You can trust us that we’ll always work on the one thing we’re good at - building beautiful, simple and innovative products.
But for now, it’s time to celebrate!
