The start of a new year is the perfect time to get fiscally fit. Today, our CFO Steffen Kiedel is sharing some simple tips that will have you take control of your finances in 2014. So whether your goal is to save up for something big or simply to spend less and save more, get started now with Wunderlist.

Make your goals achievable

We all want to achieve more - especially in a new year - but to make this to work, your goals need to be achievable.Your aim might be to save for something large, but consider setting smaller, more incremental milestones (and don’t forget to add some due dates). As you reach each step, you’ll not only be able to give yourself a high-five, but more importantly, build new saving and budgeting habits that will let you reach larger, long term goals.

Start tracking your spending now

Now that you’ve written down your goals, the best way to start saving is to find out how much you actually spend. To begin with, start tracking all of your expenses for a week in your program or app of choice. I like to use spreadsheets, but if that’s a little daunting, use apps like Mint or keep it simple and do it right here in Wunderlist. Simply write down how much you spend each time you make a purchase. Oh, and don’t forget to also categorize your purchase with Tags, like #EatingOut or #Groceries, to help you sort it out later.

Pro Tip: If you’re a Wunderlist Pro, you can take photo of your receipts with Files on your phone or tablet.

Set a monthly spending and saving budget

Grab a cup of coffee and set aside an afternoon to analyze your spending habits. Start asking yourself “do I really need or use this?”. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll find things that you can easily cut back on. It might be a magazine subscription you maybe aren’t reading anymore or starting to bring your own lunch into work instead of always eating out. As the saying goes, every penny counts, so be sure to cut back on any expenses you know you can live without.

Get a little help from your friends

Once you’ve set out all of your goals in Wunderlist, share your list with a trusted friend or loved one. Doing this will make you ten times more likely to succeed. They’ll be able to help keep you honest, provide moral support and be there to celebrate with you, when you check off those goals.
